The Distillation Story—

We are lucky to work with fragrant and fresh Tea Tree grown right here in the Pacific Northwest through our friends at Wiggle Way Farms. This tree was a gift to farmer Ash, given as a sapling grown from seed in Humboldt, California. It now sits planted on their 1.5 acre plot of farmland here in Oregon, a climate Tea Tree wouldn’t typically grow, yet here is a beautiful plant defying the odds. I think our misty climate crossover made for a very happy young tree. This harvest was the smallest amount — this one batch only for the year. Tea tree’s aromatics are sharp and minty fresh with aromatic notes of citrus, camphor & eucalyptus.

The Hydrosol—

Physically: Tea Tree carries invigorating and crisp aromatics. It functions as an excellent cleansing and antimicrobial mist and is well-loved for an itchy scalp, minimizing breakouts & excess oil, as a deodorizer, a pre— & post— exercise cleansing mist, as an aftershave and on feet to minimize surface bacteria.

Emotionally: Tea tree supports the creation of healthy boundaries and dispelling of energetic stagnation. Especially helpful to ‘clear the air’ as it has a way of cutting cords and restoring right order.

The Distillation Story

After happenstance meeting wild mugwort on a mountaintop here in the Pacific Northwest, I tucked a silvery soft leaf behind my ear and in the night placed it under my pillow before I went to bed. I dreamt of a Hydrosol named Dreamers Guild. When I dreamt of this Hydrosol, it called for me to distill it with two other botanicals I grow in our garden; late summer purple lavender and blue starflowers (aka borage).

Mugwort has a long standing history within many cultures around the world, religiously and medicinally. It’s been worked with for many applications, most famously as a dreamtime herb, encouraging deeper dreaming and more sound sleeps. Some consider it protective against darker dreams, even tucked inside shoes for energy and guidance. It resides in the artemisia (sage) family, with that signature deep, almost musky, herbaceous note to its scent.

The Hydrosol—

Physically : Revitalizing for all skin types. Balances & evens complexion, calms & cools inflammatory expressions & is especially nourishing for redness, breakouts & sensitive skin.

Harmonizes with ALL skin, especially combination skin that fluctuates seasonally.

These two plants both remarkably have names that translate into “holy”— holy basil (Tulsi) and holy grass (Sweetgrass), connecting as an ethereal, protective mist that aims to purify & harmonize mind/body/place. Together, their aromatics impart spicy, sweet, soft green notes, featuring Sweetgrass that has been lovingly grown in our Pacific Northwest garden, along with a blend of Tulsi grown in our garden and by our local Organic farm partner. Both leaves were co-distilled right after harvesting, utilizing all fresh plant material to capture the precious cellular water during distillation.

The Hydrosol—

Physically: Helpful for wind-chapped skin, light cuts and scrapes. Mildly astringent, antibacterial & antifungal— helps to disperse & remove excess oil making it especially supportive for cleansing breakouts.

Tulsi, Queen of the Herbs, has been used most prominently in sacred Ayurvedic traditions in India, and is said to harmonize the heart, mind, body and spirit. A high eugenol constituent is responsible for its distinctive scent- reminiscent of cinnamon, spicy clove, licorice and basil. Emotionally, it is most commonly worked with as a nervine, helping one remedy stress or frazzled nerves, while boosting mood and stamina. When worked with topically, it is considered antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. Tulsi is astringent in nature, supporting skin by tightening and firming tissue. It has been worked with to clear respiratory pathways and purify a space, making it a lovely mist in the Fall/Winter cold seasons.

Sweetgrass is most referenced to be worked with as a sacred herb for prayer, ceremony, weaving, burning and cleansing native to First Nation peoples. Interestingly, Sweetgrass also has roots in traditional works by Northern Europeans as well, being laid down at the entrance of churches and sacred worship sites to impart purification and a vanilla-like scent through the air. It’s Latin name (Hierochloe odorata) literally translates to holy grass and it offers a green, subtly sweet, almost honeyed scent thanks to the main constituent, coumarin. It was also utilized in the making of alcoholic spirits in Poland, and to flavor various sweets and drinks with its distinct soft vanilla notes. Also referred to as bull grass, scent grass, and vanilla grass, it’s a plant that has been cultivated for 6,000 years by people cross-culturally in almost every continent (even found in Antarctica!). Energetically, it is considered one of the strongest clearing and protective plants. Topically, it has documented use in care for light scrapes and cuts as well as for minimizing light bleeding.

The Distillation Story—

If you’ve been with us for a long while, you’ll recall this project is near and dear to my heart, as this has become a family tradition carried forth each year with my son. We began growing & harvesting together when he was only two years old - and this joyful connection has continued into his 8th year as he’s blossomed into a passionate gardener, lover of bees & protector of Earth.

Distilling for this supreme Hydrosol equates to hours spent peacefully in the garden with the family, guiding our hands to pinch each flowering top & leaving some for our mason bee friends too. We prefer harvesting with hands vs a more common large-scoop flower cutter, as this lets us connect with every single flower— a longer yet loving process. This year, we supplemented 4 extra pounds of Chamomile from our friends at Urban Acre Farms here in the PNW. Immediately after harvesting, we combine the blossoms with fresh spring water in our copper still and start up the fire for distillation! Distilling while fresh allows us the opportunity to capture the living cellular water and compounds of the plant when it’s at its peak vitality. What you get as a result is a Hydrosol that is truly alive, carrying that living imprint of a fresh flower & a snapshot of our garden and the love surrounding it. Your body will thank you!

Why is it blue?

Chamomile flowers contain a terpene called Matricin, that so happens to be incredibly anti-inflammatory. As the flowers break down in the copper still through steam & heat, the Matricin breaks down further and releases chamazulene as a result of distilling. Chamazulene is the resulting aromatic compound and is responsible for this beautiful blue color.

What’s even more beautiful than the color, is that chamazulene is a soothing & healing powerhouse! It is highly anti-inflammatory, antioxidant & has gentle yet profound wound healing capabilities.

Distillation Story—

Perhaps the most requested product we have ever received - I knew if we wanted to add a Rose Hydrosol to our collection, it needed to be unique; an idea coming forth through lived experiences that called on the direct teachings of rose. This mist embodies the entire above ground portion of the rose and began right here in our garden- including in-house distillations of juicy, fresh rose hips and lusciously scented just-picked petals + a solar infused rose leaf and thorn essence, all housed in a bottle that's double the size of our current hydrosols.

Our Rose Water is Unique.

I’ve distilled roses from our gardens many times during the last (almost) 8 years for my own pleasures and purposes, but it wasn’t until this year of learning with rose directly and experiencing so many dynamic shifts in my own life, that I came to understand that ALL parts make a whole. The prickles, the softness, the sweetness, the tartness….Life integrates all facets, as all facets have purpose & poetry.

The majority of all the roses distilled are grown right here in the Wildcare garden, years of cultivating in the making to grow roses for their specific scents and blend to reach a balance of earthy, sweet, tart, fragrant & delicate. For an important sense of place, we also marry our roses with a small amount of wild-picked Pacific Northwest roses. All rose hips are a combination of being grown by us, wild-picked, and are coming from our organic farm partners. We distill all hips and petals ourselves, a stones throw from the garden. The freshness of this Rose mist is unparalleled and quite exquisite!

While our first flagship distillation was Rosemary & Bay Laurel, fresh Lavender distillate was a must have for our line and came straight from our garden. We have been growing multiple varieties of Lavender for the last 10 years and are now up to about 20 plants in the family garden that we distill from.

The Distillation story—

This was Wildcare’s first ever flagship Hydrosol back in 2015.
Our first family garden was in Ventura, California where we had these two botanicals growing side by side. We saw how they spoke to each other and lived in harmony, one providing shelter for another and thriving through all conditions. Propolis: Fresh Pacific Northwest Propolis is a wondrous thing in nature to behold. We’ve been working with a local bee farmer for years that supplies our fresh bee pollen for Bee Rosy Mask, and have been sourcing, extracting & formulating with their propolis the last three. We are committed to working directly with farmers, especially for bee-related ephemera to ensure it’s collected humanely, leaving plenty for the colony. It’s locally extracted & included here for its profound physical actions in wound-healing, encouraging quicker recovery times & boosting cell-regeneration.

Colloidal Silver: Colloidal silver is extremely protective and has safely been worked with for people and pets to specifically accelerate soft tissue repair. Because it is such an older remedy, it has a tremendous amount of research behind it on the recovery of skin cells especially for topical use, and is one of the oldest remedies for many cultures in history. WHAT IS A HYDROSOL?

Hydrosols, also known as Distillates, are the subtle, and often aromatic waters resulting from slowly distilled plant material, and are some of nature's best antioxidants for the skin. Lovingly made using hand collected local spring water, combined with ethically wildcrafted and organically grown plant material, they are distilled in a traditional copper alembic still.

WHAT ARE HYDROSOLS?

Hydrosols, also referred to as distillates, hydrolats, or floral waters, are the subtle and often aromatic waters resulting from slowly distilled plant material. They are well-suited for beings of all ages and sensitivities (including babies and pets alike). Wildcare Hydrosols are recommended as a daily facial toner and energetic mist, playing an important role in protecting and nourishing the skin from everyday pollutants.

Hydrosols, also known as Distillates, are the subtle, and often aromatic waters resulting from slowly distilled plant material, and are some of nature's best antioxidants for the skin. Lovingly made using hand collected local spring water, combined with ethically wildcrafted and organically grown plant material, they are distilled in a traditional copper alembic still.

Alchemists from all over the world have performed transformational distillations in these traditional stills for over 3,000 years, and this artisan process still remains the same! The actual method of performing our distillations has a 5-7 hour duration, a much slower process compared to more commercialized modes of skin care production. What results, is a nutrient-rich, energetic, and authentic Hydrosol, containing the plant's own suspended micro particles of essential oil, plant acids, even a plant's specific essence and memory imprint. Each offers its own unique botanical remedy dependent on the plant distilled, thus leading to the reference that a Hydrosol is a hologram of the plant itself!
